In 2011, Nicole Semenchuk, an experienced Smithsonian researcher, joined with art historian Patricia Moss, the “Bingham Lady,” to provide complete art history services to owners of 19th century American art. Together they share nearly a quarter century of experience in art history research. Moss specializes in portraiture, especially artist identification. Semenchuk specializes in painting, especially historical contextualization. Moss began her work with George Caleb Bingham, his students and contemporaries, but successfully identifies artists from all regions throughout the century. Semenchuk’s knowledge of the works of hundreds of American artists grew from answering countless queries from scholars, researchers, and the general public in her work at the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum’s Research and Scholars’ Center.
When ethically appropriate, Moss appraises and occasionally brokers. Because of her established reputation and knowledge, museums and universities refer to Moss. Moss and Semenchuk share a commitment to integrity and excellence.
