Occasionally, Fine Art Investigations will broker carefully selected artworks. FAI is currently offering three unframed first impression original 1872 mezzotint engravings based on George Caleb Bingham’s Martial Law or Order No. 11.

George Caleb Bingham (1811 – 1879) Martial Law or Order No. 11, 32” x 43 5/16”, Line and Mezzotint Engraving by John Sartain (1808-1897) in Philadelphia, Published by Geo. C. Bingham & Co., Columbia and Kansas City, Missouri, 1872
Bingham personally gave the best prints to a friend who invested in the cost of engraving and printing, but sales were slim. By the time the engraver completed his work, Ewing had been defeated and the 1873 economic depression had begun. Unable to repay his debt, Bingham personally gave his friend the earliest, finest engravings. Through the generations, the family cared for them well. A great-great-great granddaughter inherited the prints and stored them in a safe especially made to preserve paper. The unframed 32″ x 43 2/8″ prints are in very good condition. Finer quality lithographs of George Caleb Bingham’s Martial Law or Order No. 11 will never be available again. If interested, please contact FAI.
